Contact Feeling Craving Clinging 12-24-2018

Looking back to the beginning of this year and the beginning of Spiritual Gravity I was surprised on the clarity of my first blog description (at least by my read). I have copied an edited portion of it below.   And then off to another tangent it has inspired.

We are all familiar with earth and space gravity.  Everything pulls and attracts everything else towards it.  The earth is so large in size compared to all of the objects we come in contact with that everything seems to fall toward the earth.  Spiritual gravity is similar in that everything is pulled or attracted to the center of the Heart of the Universe.*  The physical nature of things follows the routine everyday laws of gravity and objects are pulled down to the earth.  The thoughts, feelings and emotions as well as the spirit continue through the physical center of the heart in the body and are continually pulled beyond the physical body toward and into the Heart of the Universe.  What tends to block the spiritual flow is attachment or holding on to particular sticky thoughts, feelings, emotions or spirit.  Body tension is the friction that holds the spirit back creating a congestion within the body/mind/spirit of each of us.  When the spirit flows freely as tension in the body/mind is relaxed an intertwining of physical and spiritual energy is created along with the concurrent sensations of bliss, joy and happiness.
* The Heart of the Universe is not a specific place. It is the opening into the Universe from which the source of everything and nothing flows from.

An imaginary perpetual motion machine would have to have zero friction. Perpetual happiness would have to be totally free from any sticky thoughts, feelings, emotions or perceptions. The more we can reduce the stickiness the more we can merge with the natural happiness that is present.

There are four areas that create stickiness. Deconstructing these areas reduces the friction and opens to greater happiness.

stickiness

The four areas are:

Contact – what we see, hear, touch, smell, taste or think

Feeling tone or mood – how we feel about each of the above contacts; good , bad, neutral

Craving – once the feeling tone is known do we crave more or less of it

Clinging – we grasp onto the craving and cling to it for “life”

The sequence of these four areas occurs over and over again. It pulls us away from the Heart of the Universe into a small constricted space of awareness devoid of happiness.

The good news is that we can break this chain of events at any point; but we have to act quickly. The earlier in the sequence the easier it is to disrupt the order. Our best chance is during the contact or feeling tone. These two areas are natural and do not create any friction. Our senses are continually contacting the world around us and we have a natural liking or disliking for what we see, hear, touch, smell, taste and think.

If we sense the liking or disliking and let it go and move on to the next contact there is no stickiness, no friction to limit our happiness.   However, once we “allow” craving with its wanting more or less and then clinging we become stuck and the natural flow of sense contacts is blocked. It may be like reading a text message while walking and becoming so stuck on something that you particularly like or dislike that you lose sight of the person in front of you and crash.

Try this solution — once you realize you have been daydreaming or feeling unhappy by working the sequence of your thoughts backwards you can start to deconstruct which of the four areas you became stuck in. With practice you will start to notice this beginning with contacts or feelings.

Remember the earlier you “let it go” the easier it is. You might start by practicing giving in to the desire to eat ice cream and then to not finish every last drop. Let it go. When you do “let it go” the pull of Spiritual Gravity will move you towards greater happiness.
